Philip was called to the bar of Ontario in 1986 and to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2008, and has exclusively practiced patent, trademark and copyright law in Canada since 1986. He is also a Registered Patent and Trademark Agent. Prior to attending law school, he studied in the University of Toronto’s Physics Specialist Program. He obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1984, and thereafter articled at the Toronto intellectual property firm of Ridout and Maybee, and subsequently practised law at Blake Cassels & Graydon in Toronto and at Moffat & Co. in Ottawa, before establishing the predecessor to the present firm in 1996.
Throughout his career Philip has been actively involved both advising on and obtaining patent, trademark and copyright protection for his clients, and has had extensive experience in litigating patent, trademark and copyright matters in the Canadian Courts, for small, medium and large publicly traded companies. He has been interviewed on numerous occasions by CBC in relation to intellectual property matters, the last interview being conducted by Mary Lou Finlay for the CBC program “As it Happens”. Robert Nadeau, called to the Ontario Bar in 1985 and to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2007, brings 32 years of combined legal and business experience in the public and private sectors. Mr. Nadeau’s wide and diverse professional history includes 8 years in Government and 12 years as Corporate/General Counsel to executive and senior management teams, including two Fortune 500 global information technology corporations. From 1999 until joining K&N in October 2004, Mr. Nadeau was co-founder, General Counsel and principal level consultant specializing in public sector procurement, governance, accountability and performance management/risk management systems for a “boutique” management consulting firm headquartered in Ottawa, led by former senior management from Digital, Compaq, EDS and IBM. His “hands-on” experience as Corporate/General Counsel and management consultant in these diverse portfolios position Mr. Nadeau very well for counseling executive and management teams of small IT-focused entrepreneurial firms, as well as larger global 500 enterprises and government organizations.
Mr. Nadeau chaired the International Trade Committee of ITAC in the early 1990s and was one of the IT Sector’s lead negotiators during the NAFTA Negotiations focusing on market access, rules of origin and customs procedures. Mr. Nadeau offers Counsel-to-Counsel services to in-house corporate counsel who wish to become value-added providers of client-centred legal services to their corporate clients.
